According to https://www.congress.gov/committee-schedule/weekly/2020/03/09?searchResultViewType=compact&KWICView=false, the last House hearing was March 12. Hearings could be held by video conference. Oversight is one of Congress’s duties. Maybe instead of demanding oversight from the executive branch, the House could put some of that energy into their work. https://twitter.com/BGOV/status/1250038111981187072
Yesterday, Appropriations Chair Lowey said that she was working all the time. Presumably some of that includes committee work. But how can anyone know? No hearings or markups are scheduled and the House resolutely refuses to consider methods of remote work.
The House’s abdication of their work is particularly worrying when the President is claiming he has absolute authority. Many people have pointed out that the Constitution limits the federal government, but the Constitution also prescribes that each branch be co-equal.
If Congress won’t find a way to work so that it can _be_ co-equal - by engaging in oversight of the executive branch, then what makes the 10th Amendment any more binding? The House _must_ start deliberating again, remotely and transparently. It’s their one job. /end rant.
