Lots of talk about churches "growing" online in the midst of this pandemic. I hope that's the case. I hope that churches of all size are seeing not only numerical growth, but growth because of revival and a move of God in their community. But, everyone getting excited...slow down
Of course more people are tuning in online. What else do that have to do? There are no kid's travel sports, no sports on tv, no brunch with friends, no weekend getaways, no late Saturday nights. No one has to get the kids ready, themselves dressed or anything.
This past Sunday was Easter. My mom, who is on staff at her church, participated in her church, mine, and my brother’s. She ain’t doing that whenever the new normal gets here. If anyone besides her church sees her online participation as meaningful, they're in for disappointment.
Let's all do what we can for the gospel, in the best way we can. No one knows what the new normal will be. Those saying they do are selling the same answer (book, workshop, e-course) to the future they had before #Covid19, but the pandemic is now their raison d'etre.
Churches may grow. They may recede, but looking at 5-weeks of data on people's Internet behavior when the Internet is the ONLY peek into the outside world most of us have and basing the future on crises behaviors seems foolhardy.
