With the sudden spike in unemployment I have noticed a surge of performers and creators joining the sex industry. I welcome all of you, but please look before you leap. In my almost 13 years working in this field this is what I advise to the flood of new performers:
Protect yourself. Get a PO box, a throwaway email, a Google voice number and incorporate, you're a business now. Read up on safe practices for shooting, have a contract for everyone you work with and cover your ass (figuratively).
It goes without saying that once you post nudes or sell content it never goes away. Even after you quit people can and will find what you create, and most will judge you harshly for it. I’ve had banks close my accounts, been denied places to live and I’ve seen others lose jobs.
Your work will be stolen, shared and ridiculed. You will hear “Why should I pay for porn” as they continue to badger you for free content. Other performers will stand on your shoulders and producers may try to lure you with appealing offers.
Terrifying truths aside this is one of the most welcoming and empowering groups I have ever been a part of. Here you can make friends, find strength, identity and gain immense pride. This can translate into your content and with that you will thrive.
If you take the step it will be an experience you will never forget, but neither will the rest of the world. Do not let desperation force you into something you're uncomfortable with. Be smart and be safe.
