(Thread) The Cure for What Ails Us

More democracy is the way to save democracy

As Obama, said, the antidote to GOP’s underhanded methods is “citizenship: get engaged, mobilized, and vote—on every level, in every election."

Don't believe it?

1/ Read this⤵️story of how the GOP pulled from its bag of tricks every voter suppression trick it knew.

Everyone should read all of it.

It’s a harrowing story of a minority party trying desperately to hold onto power through undemocratic means. https://twitter.com/benwikler/status/1249869235683196928
2/ The courts, packed with right-wing judges (including Kavanaugh, the deciding vote in the Supreme Court) ruled against the Dems and forced people to unnecessarily risk their lives at the polls.

The GOP hoped to suppress turnout because they thought this would help them.
3/ The GOP candidate was better known and the incumbent, so the GOP thought suppressing turnout would help them.

Trump threw his weight behind their candidate. It looked bad for the Democrats.

But the underhanded and undemocratic tactics didn't work. https://twitter.com/CeruleanBlwave/status/1249884854315036678
4/ “We won not despite our principles, but because of them,” Ben Wikler.

Wisconsin didn’t fight fire with fire.
They didn’t win by adopting GOP hardball tactics.
They didn’t try to act like Republicans.

They won by organizing⤵️and going to the polls. https://twitter.com/amifoster528/status/1250039579819872257
5/ Yes, they risked infection and perhaps death—which they should NEVER have had to do.

The alternative would be to hand power to the GOP in Wisconsin for another decade, which could have had dire consequences nationwide.

Wisconsin made its choice.
6/ You know who else put their lives on the line?

The soldiers who fought a Revolutionary War because they didn’t want to be ruled by a king.

The soldiers who fought to end slavery.

The soldiers who fought to stop the murderous Nazi regime.
7/ Put Wisconsin voters in that group. They are heroes. The consequences of a second Trump term are dire.

The lesson: Start organizing now⤵️

Start NOW helping people to get their absentee ballots (29 states and D.C. allow no excuses absentee voting). https://terikanefield-blog.com/things-to-do/
