(THREAD) Fascinating article about the relative age effect and a father's quest to educate the football world. Out of curiosity, I decided to check the player list of Finland's youth national teams. Here's what I found: https://twitter.com/The_Corres/status/1250005613654007814
In the U-15’s, 11 players out of 20 are born during the first three months. 18/20 are born inside the first six months and none are born during the last three months of the year. This could just be a coincidence so I decided to check the next age group.
In the U-16’s, 16 out of 37 players were born during the first three months and 29/37 were born during the first six months of the year. Well, a pattern is starting to emerge. Let's do one more.
In the U-17’s, 19 out of 35 players are born during the first three months while 29/35 are born during the first six months. I think we can safely say that the relative age effect plays a big role in Finnish football as well.
82% of Finland’s brightest talents are born during the first half of the year. 50% are born during the first three months. Do you know how many players were born during the last three months in the three sides? Five. FIVE!
Pretty interesting results if you ask me. Let's all be aware of all kinds of common biases that are deeply rooted in our society. It tricks our mind and influence our decisions and creates an environment where some are favored and others are not.
