I was ushered into the LGBTQ community by trans women, femme gays and butch lesbians in Kwa Thema as a teen. And I just realised despite being an honorary gay from there, zange nga jola in the far East. Came close but never quite did it. Maybe one day
Anyway, my point is, I saw a tweet here a few days ago about how we don't give props to Drag queens who paved the way for us. I think we don't pay homage to trans women, femme gays and butch lesbians who paved the way.
This is made worse by our ageism, once LGBTQ people turn 35-40, yuuu re joang ke Mean Girl behavior. We are even worse to impoverished people. And it is those same people who bore the brunt of intolerance in our communities, who became examples on the path to normalization
These are some of the people, before it became cool to have LGBTQ centric campaigns, held and took part in Mr Lesbian and Miss Gay pageants in hostile township communities.
So I've been thinking about that. And no, I'm not going to launch a campaign. I'm just thinking. I reckon I've done my bit. More can still be done though. But at the very least, we can start by acknowledging people's humanity and existence plus their experiences.
