My father lived in a nursing home for some time before he died last year. I am dismayed by how little our society values the residents of care homes & care workers, who include many of the most wonderful people I’ve ever had the privilege to meet. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52275823
The astonishing kindness & skill of care workers transformed my father’s last years & our family life for the better in every way. I will never be able to thank them enough. That many are working through this without PPE,putting themselves in danger, is a scandal & national shame
I am also horrified anew, though sadly not surprised, by the lack of concern in some quarters for care home residents. These people matter deeply to many of us; those who have no relatives matter deeply too, as human beings.
Thank you to the journalists holding the government to account on this. Please keep doing so. It’s urgent and vital. And to all those out there who live or work in care homes, or love someone who does: my thoughts are very much with you.
Adding this thread to the thread above. I hope, as a society, we might begin to value care work; not just lip service, but with better pay and conditions. The importance of the work and the difference it makes to so many people can hardly be overstated. https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1250460625895129088?s=21 https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1250460625895129088
