I Don't Understand Twitter.

Having said that, I believe that I am now supposed to write 'thread' to forewarn you that this is likely to go on for a lot longer than a tweet.

Please take 'thread' as a given - brevity is not my strong point.

I don't understand the conflicts...
and I don't understand the contradictions. I am rarely a part of the former (I love a discussion, but if you want an argument I log out and hide behind a cushion). I have found myself to be a part of the latter, out of kindness, but equally with confusion.

My contradiction...
of thoughts and actions is this:

Whenever I see a tweet from someone seeking followers on Twitter, I like to support them by RTing their plea for someone to hear their voice. After all, if I were alone in a crowd, I would want someone to seek me out and make me feel included...
Wouldn't I??

Well, here's the thing...
Not necessarily.

In real life, I love life and people, but distance myself from the majority. Large gatherings scare the life out of me, and I take approximately 'forever and a day and a half' to forge real, trusting friendships...
Twitter is very different. Not only do I not understand it, but I don't understand where Mrs P fits in it.

I genuinely feel as if I have made friendships on here. I don't know how they would extend to my reality, but that's a work in progress (and a completely different...
thread). However, I have definitely not made 8K plus friendships. The numbers are a mystery to me.

I'll be honest: if I write something and lots of people read, like, retweet and comment, I like it. Why wouldn't I? For the most part, we write to be read. I am still baffled by...
the numbers though.

When I look at my timeline, I see the same people most of the time. I'm pretty sure that it is less than a hundred (I haven't counted), but it is still way more people than I would ever communicate regularly with in the real world. With these people...
and the extended conversations that branch out, my Education network is fabulous. As the numbers increase, I have more opinion, greater potential diversity and an opportunity to learn, but...

I'm fairly confident that I don't hear from or speak to 8K plus people.

This does...
not mean that I want you all to unfollow, or that I don't appreciate you, but I don't understand if the only purpose is the number.

I cannot imagine talking to 8000 people, but if we have, that is...
amazing. I would love to think that I could gauge the opinion of that many people (most of them educators), but if I'm just a number on your profile and we have never crossed paths...
I don't understand.

So, if you want to increase your numbers...
Ask yourself "Why?"

Do you..
have something you wish to share?
Do you have something you wish to learn, discuss, debate?
Great. Me too.

Will a random large number make that more possible?

I don't understand Twitter, but I do think that being in a room with 6 people you can talk to is a lot better than...
being with 600 you can't.

All of this is just my opinion of course and some of you will no doubt think, "Easy for her to say with her 8K plus", but I've been looking at Twitter and reflecting on the things I do not understand - this is just one of them...
The numbers aren't real. ♄ 🙏
