The 16,387 deaths registered in England and Wales during the week ending 3 April is the highest weekly total since @ONS started compiling weekly deaths data in 2005. This is evidence that Covid-19 is now have a major impact on deaths. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/weekending3april2020
Of deaths registered in Week 14, 3,475 mentioned “novel coronavirus (COVID-19)”, 21.2% of all deaths; compared with 539 (4.8% of deaths) in Week 13. 90.2% (3,716) of COVID-19 deaths occurred in hospital, with the remainder occurring in hospices, care homes and private homes.
The majority of COVID-19 deaths occurred in people aged 65 years and over. This is in line with data from other countries showing that the highest death rate is in older people.
The number of deaths involving COVID-19 is higher for men than women in all age groups. This is consistent with data from other countries showing an increased risk of death in men.
