I've tried to put together some thoughts on freelancing right now in case it's helpful to anyone struggling. A Thread 👇
It's not business as usual right now, it's business as best you can. That means different things for different people. Some take solace in doing any work they can get, others gravitate towards passion projects. Both (or neither) are more than fine.
Work is not gone forever, it's on hold. That's not to say what's happening now isn't excruciatingly difficult, but it will pass. It will pass.
If you've lost work, get creative when looking for new opportunities. Your industry might be tanking, but many are booming. Transfer your skills to where the work is right now
If you haven't lost work, don't feel guilty if you're struggling to get it done. Sure, us freelancers are used to working from home, but we're not used to working in a pandemic.
Chase invoices! Acknowledge there might be a cashflow issue on the client's end and be understanding but also know and exercise your right to payment!!
Hold on to the belief that everyone is trying their best. Now is not the time to blast clients because every single person you're interacting with right now is struggling in their own way.
And lastly, don't forget to extend that same empathy and kindness to yourself. 🙏💫🌛
