#DIY that chloroquine the original drug for treatment of malaria was made from the bark of Cinchona trees ! These plants plants are native of South America,the medicinal properties of its bark were originally known to the Incas of Peru.
Cinchona Officinalis is the National Tree of #Peru ! Cinchona is one such wonder tree , which has saved millions of lives world over !!
The Cinchona cultivation in India was started by Dr.Thomas Anderson,the then Superintendent of the Royal Botanical Garden, Calcutta in 1861.He started experimental trial for its cultivation in Darjeeling hills &ultimately selected Mungpoo Hills for commercial cultivation.
Dr Thomas Anderson later served as the the Superintendent of #Bengal Forest Department for a couple of years and died in 1870 at a young age of 38! He is buried in Dean Cemetery in western #Edinburgh !
In April 2018 his statue was installed in Darjeeling by Dr. Samuel Rai, Director of Cinchona plantations !! Synthetic quinine subsequently replaced natural quinine ! India today produces 70% of #chloroquine and is exporting it to the world to fight #CoronaCrisis !!
