So, someone on FB commented on a post made by someone I know, won’t get into it all, but this person said that when she was a child the majority of Bahamians were white.
I definitely facepalmed. Then I had to respond. Didn’t wanna come off harsh to shut down their receptiveness to learning. So, I politely let them know that whites haven’t been the majority since at least the early 1800’s. #BahamianHistory
Didn’t get into why that shift occurred. Which simply, it was due to the influx of loyalists, many of whom brought slaves; there were some freed folx but not the majority. Note this thread is filled with decendents of loyalists, including myself.
Would love to get into that so hopefully people respond to the info I shared and it sparks conversation. I also shared 2010 census data in which only 5% of respondents identified as white.
I noted in my comment that it might have seemed like the majority of Bahamians were white for some due to a high concentration of whites in certain places the Abaco Cays (where I’m from and these people are).
This was a result of racism.
There’s a lot that white Bahamians need to reconcile about our history. There’s a real lack of understanding of colonial legacies and white supremacy.
Just because some of us were/are poor it doesn’t mean we are exluded these legacies.
