S3E4. Bart the Murderer.

Bart joins the "Legitimate Business Owners Club" as bartender and inadvertently becomes Don. The racehorses named after cartoon catchphrases is genius.

Skinner's "courageous story" πŸ”₯

Troy McClure film: The Revenge of Abraham Lincoln. 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E5. Homer Defined.

Homer prevents two meltdowns. By accident. Becomes Lisa's hero. Magic Johnson!

Hartman characters aside, nobody gets better lines than Burns. "Employee of the month isn't all ham and plaques."

To pull a Homer: to succeed despite idiocy. πŸ‘€

🍩🍩🍩🍩
S3E6. Like Father, Like Clown.

Krusty reveals he's estranged from his father. With Jackie Mason perfect as Rabbi Krustofsky. And Brad Bird of Pixar fame directing for the first time.

It's funny, it's layered, it's got gravitas and it quotes Sammy Davis Jnr.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E7. Treehouse of Horror II.

Second one is better than the first? Like Evil Dead 2.

The first pun credits! The cursed monkey paw! Bart turns Homer into a jack in the box! Two headed-Burns!

"our country isn't called America any more. It's called bonerland."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E8. Lisa's Pony.

Opening with one of many, many 2001 homages. Homer fails Lisa, so works at the Kwik-e-Mart to buy her Princess the pony. The scene she discovers the pony is perfect.

Too many brilliant sight gags to mention. The sleep-deprived drive home!

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E9. Saturdays of Thunder.

Homer gets help to be a father. Cats in the Cradle as parenting hotline on-hold music! Bart and Homer build a go-kart.

This series just nails that wholesome/cynicism balance perfectly.

McClure TV series: Buck Henderson - Union Buster.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E10. Flaming Moe's.

Perfect.

Cocktails! Betrayal! Cheers pastiche! Aerosmith! Hugh Jass answering the phone! Tipsy McStagger's Goodtime Eating and Drinking Emporium! A gumdrop house on lollipop lane!

"it passed the first test. I didn't go blind."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E11. Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk.

Burns sells the plant to German businessmen, then finds nobody fears him.!. And the land of chocolate. It's great.

Homer sells his stock for $25. That bit is kind of crushing.

"ooooh, the Germans are mad at me..."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E12. I Married Marge.

The story of Bart's birth. And Homer being good.

Ruining the Empire Strikes Back is brilliant. Hibbert's hair. Shotgun Pete's. Knife salesman. Onion wedding ring.

"Did you get the job?"
"No, they wanted someone good."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E13. Radio Bart.

Bart gets a radio mic for his birthday. Convinces the town Timmy O'Toole is trapped down a well.

Rod and Todd being fooled into cookie delivery. Sting guesting on the charity song is very good.

One of those that was way ahead of its time.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E14. Lisa the Greek.

Lisa and Homer bond because she's great at picking football winners. It's really hitting stride.

Daddy/daughter day. The happiest day of Ralph's life was when he didn't have worms any more.

"Miami to be Smooth Jimmy's Lock of the Week."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E15. Homer Alone.

Amazing it took 50 episodes - Marge snaps, goes to Rancho Relaxo, Springfield's only two star health spa. Homer looks after Maggie solo.

McClure film: Gladys the Groovy Mule.

"And after midnight, the finest erotic movies Europe has to offer." 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E16. Bart the Lover.

Mrs K takes out a personal ad, Woodrow/Bart responds. Which is incredibly dark, retrospectively.

The yo-yo story and the swear jar are good enough to have been episodes on their own.

"fiddle dee dee, that's going to require a tetanus shot." 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E17. Homer at the Bat.

It's one of the very best, isn't it? In the top five episodes, and one of the best pieces of television ever created.

"I heard some guy got killed in New York... and they never solved the case."

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩

Tempted to give it six.
S3E18. Separate Vocations.

Lisa's aptitude test gets mixed up, her dreams of being a jazz musician are dashed, so she goes rogue.

It's good, but not quite as much fun as the rest of the series. Bart's ride along with the police is great though. Nice nod to Bullitt.

🍩🍩🍩
S3E19. Dog of Death.

Santa's Little Helper needs an operation, runs away and becomes Burns' guard dog.

There's a lot of self-referential nods in this series or call-backs to previous eps. Ned still wearing his Assassins, Michael Jackson freeway, Skinner's note... Good

🍩🍩🍩🍩
S3E20. Colonel Homer.

Homer takes on managing Lurleen Lumpkin's country career.

First big musical element introduced to an episode. And if you're going to take on country music, you better have the tunes.

"It takes two to lie. One to lie and one to listen."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E21. Black Widower.

Sideshow Bob and Selma get married. A very neat little crime caper. The second Bart vs Bob squareoff, at least two very risquΓ© jokes and a great nod to North by Northwest.

"Hey weiner boy, where do you think you're going?"

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E22. The Otto Show.

Otto loses his job and moves in with the Simpsons. Bart learns guitar (left handed). And Spinal Tap cause a riot, less than a year after Axl Rose did it in real life.

"This is a rock concert, not the bleedin' splish-splash show."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E23. Bart's Friend Falls in Love.

Not every episode has a great title...

Millhouse and Samantha. Indiana Jones homage and fluffy bunny video absolutely masterful. Homer accidentally increases his vocabulary

Troy McClure film: lead paint, delicious but deadly

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S3E24. Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes.

Return of Uncie Herb, who invents the baby translator, gets rich again, and regains a brother.

The psychedelic vibrating chair is brilliant. Toy bird drinking the water is one of the best scenes in the series. Lovely.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S4E1. Kamp Krusty.

The greatest series actually starts with one that's *just okay*. Feels a bit series one.

Bart and Lisa go to summer camp, which ends being a sweatshop. Homer gets in the shape of his life.

"Gorge yourselves at the trough of freedom!"

🍩 🍩 🍩
S4E2. A Streetcar Named Marge.

Marge gets a part in A Streetcar Named Desire. Maggie stages a jailbreak at the Ayn Rand School for Tots.

Firm classic. It's smart and it's stupid. There's a Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker pace and rate of jokes. And great music.

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S4E3. Homer the Heretic.

Always assumed this was earlier. Homer misses church, has the best day of his life, and becomes a pariah. With a guest appearance from Big G himself. Amazed this sneaked onto mainstream TV.

"it's good for what ails ya!"

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
An all-time-great bit of physical comedy here though.
S4E4. Lisa the Beauty Queen.

Lisa sees "what she might look like as a cartoon character" and decides she's ugly, and goes for Little Miss Springfield.

Lovely father/daughter moments. Little Miss Sunshine borrowed a fair bit here? Menthol Moose! Bob Hope!

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S4E5. Treehouse of Horror III.

The cursed frogurt, the King Kong parody, Bart raises the dead and the most risquΓ© joke ever told in 600-odd episodes.

"I remember when Al Jolson ran amok in the winter garden and climbed the Chrystler Building."

🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩 🍩
S4E6: Itchy and Scratchy, The Movie.

Bart gets banned from seeing the I&S Movie. Learns a lesson. First appearance of Bumblebee Man.

Poison pizza/I'm not making two stops joke is perfect. Joke, then another joke to escalate it, then a sucker punch.

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩

Plus this...
S4E7. Marge Gets a Job.

For me, one of the best. So much energy.

The Simpson house is subsiding, Marge gets a job at the power plant, Burns is smitten and Bart cries wolf and gets attacked by wolves.

Troy McClure instructional film: Mothballing Your Battleship.

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E8. New Kid on the Block.

An incredible run of episodes. Should be taught in schools.

Bart falls for Laura his new neighbour, Homer sues the all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant, and there's a big payoff for the prank calls.

"Come for the freak, stay for the food."

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E9. Mr Plow.

Top three ever? Grandpa Simpson as Old Man Winter. The jingle. The jacket. Adam West. The payoff at the end. Perfect.

Troy McClure film: The Erotic Adventures of Hercules.

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E10. Lisa's First Words.

As the title suggests.

A bit of a backwards step after the previous few, but there's some nice moments between Homer/Abe and Homer/The Kids. And the sub-plot about the 1984 Olympics is better than the main story.

🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E11. Homer's Triple Bypass.

Still weird to me that it's matter-of-fact they need $40k for the bypass.

Bad Cops is an incredibly strong start. "now I know I haven't been the best..." Homer being weak as a kitten. Dr Nick!

One of the best scripts of the series.
🍩🍩🍩🍩
Marge vs. the Monorail time.
S4E12.

Quite simply, one of the greatest American cultural achievements of the 20th century. Stand-up comedy, rock and roll, the moon landings, Nirvana... and Marge vs. The Monorail.

From the Flintstones opener to the Escalator to Nowhere, absolute perfection.

🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E13. Selma's Choice.

Selma's quest for a man is good. The visit to Duff Gardens ("we're roaming gangs aren't a problem any more!") is very good. But the best bit is Homer and his sandwich.

Some vintage Phil Hartman in here too.

🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E14. Brother from the Same Planet.

Bart gets a bigger brother after being let down by Homer. Hartman as Tom. Homer joins Bigger Brothers and gets "Pepsi" (Pepi).

Nice wee Ren and Stimpy cameo too.

"it's pronounced learned."

🍩🍩🍩🍩
S4E15. I Love Lisa.

The Wiggums are our favourite non-Simpsons family, right?

Ralph falls in love with Lisa. Sideshow Rocky. The Mediocre Presidents. And a Chief Wiggum joke I can't remember being that risquΓ©.

"Mr Simpson, the tar fumes are making me dizzy."
