“Online gamers have said way worse than the n-word.” 1. How many words are more offensive than the n-word? 2. That doesn’t mean it’s okay to say it. 3. Kyle Larson is a top NASCAR driver representing many many people and industries. He’s not just a regular online gamer.
“Black people say it all the time.” Black people don’t say hard Rs. Though I don’t agree with it, black people have taken a word that makes them inferior and made it a way of endearment towards fellow black people. You don’t understand if you don’t know the culture. Learn.
“It wasn’t intended to be racist.” You can’t say that a racist slur, that is defined as a racist slur, is not a racist slur when you use it cause of “context.” There’s no exceptions or asterisk. It’s a racist slur. Always has been.
“It’s just a word. This is PC BS. I wasn’t offended.” Notice how most people who say this aren’t black? You know who this racist slur degrades? Black people. Most black people aren’t happy. I think that’s justified, and if you have any sense of understanding, you’d agree.
And that’s not to say non-black people are ignorant. A lot aren’t, and I’m appreciative for that. But out of the people who don’t understand the severity of the word, most if not all aren’t black. You know....The group this slur degrades.
Again, I may not personally say the “a” ending, but at least I know what that means to and within the black culture. At least I have that understanding even though I choose not to say it.
A history lesson will teach a lot. There’s a reason why the hard R is frowned upon for black folk. For decades and centuries, it has degraded and dehumanized black people, leading to horrible things for them. Perspective is key. Learn.
The fact that people are more pissed about Larson’s consequences for a racial slur more than the racial slur itself makes me sick to my stomach.
People are trying to take one of, if not the most vile racial slurs there is and wash all the meaning off of it for their own use. Disgusting. I’m thankful for those in NASCAR media who are telling the truth on how bad this truly is.
I’m sorry I had to rant, and at the same time I’m not. I have a right to be pissed. Black people have a right to be pissed. Understanding and learning is key before opening your mouth. Think before you speak. Show some compassion. Understand other racial groups and their stories.
This is my #1 sport by far. For 16 years. I still love the sport. I want this sport to be part of my life. When I see people in the industry who I know of that don’t get where I’m coming from and push this real issue to the side like it’s nothing, it hurts. A lot.
“But it was just a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.” Okay true.....when people make mistakes, there are gonna be consequences. If you screw up, there’s likely gonna be a consequential result from it. This is no different. Just cause it’s a mistake doesn’t mean no consequence.
“Would Bubba get the same outrage and punishment if he said it?” YES. YES. HE. WOULD AND SHOULD. He would deserve the same punishment. Again, black people don’t say the hard R. Whether you agree the “a” ending or not, just understand why black people say it to each other.
Imagine trying to take a horrible thing and turning it to make it a more positive meaning for you and your own people who are affected by the horrible thing. That horrible thing clearly ain’t going away. If you don’t feel like saying that word, like me, don’t. But understand it.
People are way too quick to judge what people of other cultures and races should say. Don’t critique, don’t imitate first. Learn first why that culture has their own thing and why it sticks to that culture. That’s what makes cultures unique. Otherwise, there’s no culture.
And people are trying to make Larson the victim for inexplicably saying a racial slur that has victimized black people for decades and centuries. And people say it’s political correctness BS. Wow.
Am I happy to see Larson go through what he’s going through? No. It sucks. I liked Larson. But accountability is key. Once he faces the punishment, I hope he learns, becomes a better person and gets a 2nd chance. Simple lesson: Don’t call ANYONE the n-word or ANY racial slur.
There are black folk young and old who love NASCAR like any other fan. Same with fans from other races. We’re in this together, but there needs to be understanding and courtesy with our different backgrounds. We all want to make the sport better. Courtesy, love, understanding.
