i wanted to wait a few days before saying anything else bc i wanted Black Indigenous/ Caribbean voices to hold their much deserved space. i think its normal to be reactive. but we have to be accountable. we should consider boundaries when we have a misunderstanding.
as a Plains Ndn i have things to say. i care ab this topic. At first glance I think its normal to feel confused and angry, to want to be reactive. As a matter of fact i feel like it was bound to happen and yenno what? at the end of the day yt ppl are still to blame.
its hard. it really is. bc Ndn Country still has to un-learn anti-Blackness. i still want to be able to discuss to aspects of this that people are missing.
haha “a few days” time isnt real, anyways

at first glance i will admit that the headdress in question looked strikingly similar to the cheap knock offs yt ppl make for profit. i think its honest mistake to make. i see hot pink faux headdresses at flea markets all the time. its almost like a reflex at this point
but if you were able to read the caption and if you know literally anything ab Carnival, i feel like you should be able to restrain yourself before jumping to conclusions. i feel like the root of this, aside from anti-Blackness obviously, are language barriers??
stay with me lmao. i feel like we can all go back and forth ab doing your research all day but no one is a genius. no one knows everything. lack of access to things like proper media/historical/cultural representation is a thing. all over the globe.
bc of that we are often misinformed. as marginalized ppls we are portrayed incorrectly and as a result i dont think its that uncommon or surprising that this is an issue.
I was jarred and and angry and confused when i saw that picture yes. I thought it was the same tired argument resurfacing on cue again but it wasnt. As a Plains Ndn i’m here to say that other Plains Ndns need to step back, apologize and open their minds.
