OK so this is weird.
Here's the SNES game Home Alone 2, right? It's got a rather boring ugly font, no shadows, blocky letters.

but if you look at the tiles loaded, they appear to have a shadow!

It turns out they're using palettes to set the shadow color to... white.
The same color as the background.

So if it had been set to something reasonable like a shade of grey, you would have gotten this, which still isn't great but is clearly better.

so all I can figure is that they decided late in the game that they wanted to get rid of the shadows, but didn't edit it out of the game data, just tweaked the palettes?

either that or they reuse this font elsewhere with a different background, and didn't realize the shadow was missing on this background
