Random late night character ramblings, but I really don't get how a character having reasons for being evil/mean/bad/whatever is enough for them to be beloved.
Are we really that basic that a character not being "bad just because" is enough?

I read this thread where people were discussing Makoto P5, saying "oh I disliked her in vanilla because she was a bitch, but in Royal I got to see the reasons for her being a bitch so I liked her". If she's still a bitch, why??
Real people who are bad have reasons too

We don't go "yeah a friend of mine abandoned his family and murdered 10 people, but he had a rough childhood so he's just misunderstood". How does that make you like a character any more? What, you expected them to be born a dick? Is this all we can muster for depth in writing?
