On a cliff-top overlooking a rocky bay, St David was born in the midst of a thunderstorm.

His mother gripped a boulder in agony. Her fingers gouged the stone.
As David entered the world, a bolt of lightning split the boulder in two.

Here, his mother built a chapel.

David’s father was Sant, King of Ceredigion.

One day, he was chasing a stag along the banks of the River Teifi, Pembrokeshire. Once he had caught the stag, he did a spot of fishing. Once he had a decent catch, he found a swarm of bees and helped himself to their honey.

Feeling pleased with his haul, an angel appeared and ordered that he take a portion of his food to the nearby monastery.

As Sant and the angel walked along, the angel told him that the gifts he brought symbolised the virtues of son that would soon be born to him.

Sant deposited his gifts… and it was here that he met Non, who would become the mother of his child.

When news of her pregnancy broke, Non hid on a cliff-top. A man in her village persecuted her and sought the life of her son.
It turns out this man was her father, Cynyr.

The ruins of St Non’s cliff-top chapel remain on the site where she gave birth. There is also a holy well close by.

Her son David entered the monastery of Hen Fynyw at a young age, and would go on to become the patron saint of Wales.

We care for an ancient church dedicated to St David on the banks of the River Teifi – where the angel told his father of his birth.

Many churches are dedicated to St David - tho there is “not one to the north of a line drawn from the mouth of the River Wyre to Glasbury”.

David’s dying words were, ‘Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd’ - ‘Do the little things in life’.

A reminder for us all.
