George Washington was a pretty crappy farmer and a very "meh" tactician (starting with the Seven Years' War) - but he knew how to relate to and inspire people, and put the welfare of the whole above his own personal advancement. As such, he was uniquely qualified to both 1/6
shepherd the Continental Army in Revolution through Valley Forge and beyond, and to serve as the first President of the United States. Given stature and position, Washington could have easily twisted the US Presidency to dictatorship and lifetime appointment - yet he did not. 2/6
As spelled out in speeches, correspondence, and his farewell address, Washington (for all his faults) recognized the need to step aside and trust in the institutions and burgeoning customs of the fledgling democracy, so that it might grow and then prosper. 3/6
While there have been many rather shitty executives of the US since Washington, all have at least paid respect to the nature and stature of the office of President of the United States, given this country's rather short lineage and pedigree and uniqueness among mankind. 4/6
So, to see some callow, blustering charlatan basically shit all over a legacy even disgraceful officeholders still paid fealty to by claiming "total authority" is not merely concerning... 5/6
it is fundamentally insulting to the office, the country, and those who believed in this experiment. I used to laugh at the failures and ineptitude of DJT and his enablers - now I fear for the fruit of this hellish marriage of convenience, and its legacy for years to come. 6/6
