I watched The Clark Sisters' movie again... still think it was great, but I know where it fell short (for me)...
aight.

I know it was for entertainment purposes but I felt like some really great opportunities were missed.

They should have started the story earlier to illustrate the Moss family's music roots and some of Mattie's background to explain why she was as strict as she was.
They also could have done a better job of focusing on the music (again, I understand that wasn't the purpose of the film). It would've been great to see Twinkie go to Howard and how that experience influenced her style. I would've liked to see them discuss her solo albums as well
She was releasing solo albums in the early 80s while still writing, recording, and traveling with the group. It's important to understand her struggles with defining her own identity and the power dynamic between she and her mother.
also, I REALLY wanted them to focus a bit on that bridge between the secular and gospel worlds a bit more and how The Clark Sisters (under Twinkie's direction) were trailblazers in incorporating elements of disco and R&B into their music.
That influenced so many who came after them (in both worlds) and has a direct connection to 90s R&B.
I wanted to see a bit more of Karen and Dorinda... a little less of Jacky. It often felt like a lot of the story was told from her perspective and painted her in a brighter light than the rest of the sisters (I suppose because she's the eldest, they granted her that).
There was more to Denise's story than how they portrayed her. I know we let the jokes fly, but they should've explored other options there. I know Denise was unwilling to contribute, but I don't blame her.
I mean... if we can't mend the familial relationship and our SISTERHOOD, I wouldn't want to contribute to one of your business ventures.

Especially of being treated like an outcast for over 40 years. But that's just me.
and again... I wanted more focus on the MUSIC. We needed those R&B and disco elements. We needed to see them be one of the first gospel groups to have a rapper on their album in the 80s. We needed to see how their sound differed when Twinkie left the group.
Would've been nice to see how she was convinced to return to the group and Karen's growth as a writer. Wanted to see Dorinda go into the ministry. Wanted to show Karen and Dorinda both playing the organ.

But that's just me.

They just skipped so many years.
It went from like 1995/1996 to 2007 in the blink of an eye.

But I get it. Entertainment. Movie. Fictionalization.
Casual fans (and new fans) walked away learning new things, even if they weren't accurate.

That's my main gripe with biopics.
It's also really hard being a real fan of someone's music and trying to appreciate a biopic for what it is.

That's what it really boils down to here.
