The story I've heard as to why is interesting.

Studios buy up A LOT of scripts. Most never get made.

When one studio spins up what is assumed to be a blockbuster, other studios dig in their script library and fast track a similar film.

I'm sure there are probably other factors involved as well.

Like trends on when Sci-Fi is trending popular, etc.

But it's interesting to me to see the business behind the curtain in film making. This is the best example of it IMO.
