As I continue to listen through @thedollop podcast I can't help but notice that they continue to refer to women who aren't incredibly thin as "monsters." The same thing doesnt happen with men.
What's most interesting is that the hosts clearly have no clue what weights mean in regards to physical composition. One of the first was Cary A Nation. She was against alcohol and would use a hatchet to break bottles in protest.
She was described in the pod as over "200 lbs and a monster." Ostensibly we could say that her behavior was monstrous but most of the comments like this were about her body.
The most recent that I've listened to was the episode about Stagecoach Mary aka Mary Fields. Similar comments were about her body. Overall they presented her as a badass because she was one.
The podcast started in 2014. Im at episode 140 in the beginning of 2016. So there is a lot of content that I havent gotten to yet. It has been frustrating, especially since they mostly talk about the history of men.
What it really brings up is how little people actually know about weight and body composition. The format of the podcast leaves a lot unanswered because one host is telling the other host about a topic. So their response is based on limited information.
But it gives a really good example of the language that is used to describe women's bodies that we perceive to break weight norms.
The podcast is hilarious in general but it's just so annoying that this is where we continue to be. I hope as I continue listening that it gets better.
I will probably update this thread if it comes up again.
