THREAD: I have been frequently updating a big playlist of l women making badass music that I think deserve more attention. In the tweets below I’m gonna talk about some of my favs, why I love them & why you should check them out! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4UJX6fwg11KzwjE1EU1YKL?si=TfXeonDQTAKErLZ3PMmKXQ
It’s Butter @helloitsbutter: brilliant funk-infused indie pop-rock. groovy, catchy and soulful songs, with super tight and tasteful musicianship. these elements pair beautifully with @unfilterdbritta’s unique voice and personal, relatable lyrics. 📸: @bitterxblood_
Crimson Apple @CrimsonAppleXO: When we used to play with these 4 sisters, they were more of a pop-rock band, now they’ve embraced electronic alt-pop production to expand their sound. They’re an incredible live band, and Colby’s one of the most skilled singers I‘ve ever seen.
Ramonda Hammer @RamondaHammer: I found RH on bandcamp a couple years ago before I realized they’re local(ish). Kickass grungy/indie/alt rock with some real heaviness and atmosphere at times, often very melancholy with some really visceral vocal performances. 📸: @allanwaffleswan
Sharptooth @sharptoothmd: I’d been burnt out on hardcore for a while before I came across this band but they reminded me what made me love HC the first place & made it all fresh again. A must-listen for anyone into heavy music or fed up with the state of the world. 📸: @Dunrath
The Arbor @TheArborBand: progressive alt-rock with some great pop sensibility. the instrumentals have a Polyphia vibe to them but the technical bits never feel like shred for the sake of shred. their prog elements serve as hooks that enhance their pop side quite cleverly.
Venus @VENUSGRRRLS: they take that classic 90s riot grrrl/grunge aggression and infuse it with atmospheric synths and soulful vocals. Their Spotify bio mentions Bikini Kill and Heart, but their song “Amy” almost gives me Florence vibes. They’ve got some range that’s for sure.
Side note I couldn’t fit the photographer’s @ in the last tweet but @mai_hinsley does great work I’m really impressed. First two are of @VENUSGRRRLS, then @weareYONAKA and @thisiszuzu. Website is http://kayleighhinsley.com
Queen Cult @queencultband: Venus suggested them. QC only has one song out but it’s a banger. Reminds me of the boogie moments on the last QOTSA album (might be in part that both bands have Queen in the name). Tight, heavy, upbeat, catchy, groovy as all hell. 📸: Steve Thornhill
Constellations @ConstellationAz: God what a solid band. Nice blend of hard rock, pop punk, and hardcore. Melodic, memorable choruses balanced out by savage riffs and breakdowns. Their new single “Cursed” is one of my favorites, has that magic that Beartooth had on Sick/Disgusting
Once again couldn’t fit photo cred in the last tweet but @KellysAFox is a badass photographer definitely check out her work. http://Vixenvisuals.com
Doll Skin @DollSkinBand: this is gonna be the biggest band I mention in this thread but I can’t make a thread of awesome lady bands without mentioning one of my personal biggest inspirations. Their mix of pop punk, hardcore, and emo really is the future of rock imo📸: @camerongile
Forever Starts Today @FSTband: If you thought pop punk was dead, think again. These Austinites aren’t reinventing the genre, but they’re taking its conventions and raising the bar. Great live too, their musicianship, energy, and stage presence speak for themselves. @PillajerProd
18th & Addison @18thAddison: this Jersey duo is another great pop punk band (we actually played with them and FST at the same show). I’d say 18A‘s music often has a bit more of an indie-rock tinge to them; less like Neck Deep more like Mixtapes. Quality stuff. 📸: @marcusallover
Summer Twins @summer_twins: this band broke up 2 years ago, but they’ve long been one of my favorite local bands and always put me in a good mood. Incredibly sweet hippie indie rock, for all your vintage needs. The twins still have ongoing solo work that’s also great.
Chase Petra @chasepetramusic: I have a whole thread about how great their album Liminal is but this band is one of my favorites ever & is a must-listen. 📸: @chillstrege https://twitter.com/hoitytoity_ca/status/1244165759552475136
The Wild And Free @thewildfreeband: This band’s got a nice, upbeat, modern alt/pop/rock sound with so many great singles. Bop after bop after bop, hooks for days, they don’t miss. Just a super fun band, Smoke and Mirrors always gets me dancing 📸: Courtney Ann
Potty Mouth @pottymouthworld: I seriously cannot believe I haven’t seen Potty Mouth live yet. They’re one of the very best current punk bands out there, and the album SNAFU they put out last year is full of bangers. Favorite tracks are Liar and Plastic Paradise.
📸: Naz Massaro
Pity Party (Oakland) @PityPartyBand: another band I’ve been meaning to catch live but haven’t been able to (but they’ve seen us, funnily enough). Emo pop punk from the bay, with frenzied and raw performances where the energy really comes across through the record.📸: @aretesophist
Gen & The Degenerates @gensdegenerates: Another that Venus suggested. Cocaine is my favorite track of theirs with its heavy bass groove reminiscent of ‘77 Talking Heads. Some of their other songs have more of that conventional upbeat indie rock sound, very fun. 📸: @glamgigpics
The Seamonsters @cmonstersmusic: new wave-influenced indie pop bursting with personality. I find that in general a lot of bands that are very 80s-influenced tend to sound kinda gimmicky, but these ladies do it with such flair, they really make their sound theirs. 📸: @VonPip
Forever Emerald @_ForeverEmerald: LA pop rock/pop punk band built from Musicians Institute alumni, writing some of the catchiest tunes this side of the Mississippi. Another killer high-energy live band, @saferdev’s cartwheel game is on point.
📸: @Realalanayala
Sammi Lanzetta @sammilanzetta: feminist indie rock & roll with a nice vintage/old-school charm. Favorite song is Titty Logic, with some really fun guitar work and a lot of snark and personality.
📸: @joey_wharton
Meet Me @ The Altar @MMATAband: These three ladies absolutely fucking rip. Another great band for lovers of pop punk. I especially love the tight guitar work on songs like Tyranny, and their new single May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor is catchy as hell. 📸: @larodgers_
