One of the many things I’ve fallen in love with recently are paintings by Haitian artist Louisiane Saint Fleurant 1/3
Florent was a day labourer and cook who took on painting late in life. As a founding member of the Saint Soleil artist community as well as the Cinq Soleil art movement, she was at her time, one of the few well known women artists working in Port au Prince 2/3
Her primary methods were painting and sculptures. She was the mother of Haitian artists Magda Magloire, Ramphis Magloire and the late Stivenson Magloire, who were all members of the Saint Soleil group 3/3 (Portrait of Fleurant & her sculpture via Galerie Macondo )
+ Unlike many of her contemporaries which then were primarily men, Fleurants visuality centred womanhood, children and motherhood through various references to Haitian Voodoo Loas (deities)
