Okay, time to rant and upset a couple of people. So in the past, I’ve been a a bit of a defender of award shows like Emmys and Oscars. I tend to like them more than I dislike them. Having said that, there are plenty of valid criticisms that can be levied towards them.
I’ve made these criticisms in the past. I may make them again in the future. But I get really annoyed with the whole “Award show disagree with me. So award show bad” thing I see online a lot.
One of the most interesting examples of this I’ve seen online is from MrEnter’s review of Shark Tale. In the review, he said it’s okay if people in his audience like the movie even though he doesn’t. But in the same review, he says it bad that the Oscars nominated it?
Here’s the thing, if MrEnter said something along the lines of “I think it’s a bad thing they nominated Shark Tale because I have reason to believe they don’t even watch the movies and just pick the ones from the major animation studios,” then that would be fine.
But his point basically amounted to “different opinion bad.” He’s done this a bunch of times. And there’s never any nuanced criticism looking into the possible reasons why they nominate things he dislikes. PieGuyRulz, a reviewer I have a lot more respect for, has done this too.
Also, not all award shows are equal. The Daytime Emmys generally don’t nominate stuff w/ the quality as the Primetime. Why? They don’t have as much to choose from. The Golden Globes aren’t that great either. Their main problem is the weirdness of the Musical/Comedy category.
If you want to see some constructive criticism of an award show, I recommend this video by Renegade Cut. I don’t agree with all of it. But it’s the kind of award show criticism I’d like to see more of.
Enter’s review of Shark Tale was mostly fine by the way from what I remember.
