As part of rewatches and first-time viewings ahead of upcoming Arts & Faith Top 100 voting, am *finally* going through Criterion DVDs that were given me years ago. That library's not open, distracting me with newer releases, helps greatly!
There are numerous titles I'd like to get to in the next few weeks. Already I let last night get away, thinking I had a Bergman DVD that, alas, isn't part of my collection. (Although I do have it on laserdisc - currently not hooked up.)
This project actually got underway two nights ago with De Mille's KING OF KINGS (1927). https://twitter.com/christian_ham/status/1249178346044428288
So tonight, it's already after 9 p.m., and I've decided to watch ... RAN. Was going to do L'AVENNTURA, but apparently not.
Concluding words of MALTIN VIDEO GUIDE review of RAN, "Oscar winner for Best Costume Design," read like a cruel punchline. Needed to refresh my memory (I was 15 at the time but remember the oversight) so: https://www.nytimes.com/1985/12/19/movies/how-kurosawa-s-ran-missed-a-shot-at-oscar.html
Tonight: Resnais’ NIGHT AND FOG. Had no idea this one runs just 31 minutes.
Leveled by NIGHT AND FOG. I’ve seen numerous Holocaust films and documentaries yet was still unprepared for some of what this movie showed me. I won’t soon forget it.
TFW you tweet about seeing a life-changing movie for the first time and get zero responses. My life has been changed, people! OK, carry on...
Forgot to note that @GuitarGnostic left his receipt in the DVD case. He bought this life-changing DVD for $9.99 (!!) at a Borders in 2004. In the same purchase he acquired TO LIVE ($10.99) and DECAMERON ($14.99).
Looks like DECAMERON is a Criterion title, so maybe it's on my shelf? Don't recall seeing it during my earlier scans.
