Talked with my dad today about how my brother who is on the autism spectrum has been handling things. The answer: not well. People on the spectrum tend to rely on routines and predictability. Right now literally nothing is predictable. Routines have gone out the window.
Tbh I hadn’t even considered the impact this pandemic is having on folks on the spectrum, but it must be profoundly difficult. The anxiety you have? Times that by 100. Feeling isolated? Welcome to some people’s world. My heart aches thinking about how alone and confused he feels
I started looking up resources and while there are quite a few, many are focused on helping young kids on the spectrum. My brother is 21 and a lot of the advice doesn’t apply to him. And of course he’s not the only non neurotypical adult going through this. So where do we go?
Idk how to wrap up this thread other than to say that I am holding extra space in my heart for those who are struggling right now. Parents, kids, adults on the spectrum. Everyone.
