I’ve had 3 bosses over a total of six years who lived, breathed, & said aloud the same motto daily:

Every day is a tryout.

OK, look. We all know what you’re saying: You have to be at 💯 each day or you get kicked off the team.

This mentality that NCOs and officers of all grades are trying out for the Varsity Team, or competing each day to be on the best team is nothing short of toxic.

You gentlemen might have thought you were motivating a team. Instead, your “failure is not an option” sentiment was breeding ideas of scarcity and competition with each other.
3/
You thought you were building a winning team? Nope - you were breaking your own team down. You thought you were crushing it on a daily basis. Nope - you were crushing your own people.

Mostly because you lack empathy.

And when you’re a Rater or Senior Rater who says this type of thing daily, your junior leaders take this as your command philosophy. They repeat it (a lot). This becomes their philosophy. Pretty soon, you have a whole BN or Bde competing WITH EACH OTHER to be the best.

Look, I did 36 months of KD time at the BN & BDE level. Treating every day like a tryout or competition is dangerous. The Army needs leaders who accept vulnerability and risk, and who treat their people with respect.

What are you afraid of, commanders?
