This story by @AshelyFetters put into words a lot of the thoughts I was having about how schools are trying to replicate the #college campus experience over Zoom. At some point we need to realize that this is impossible. (THREAD) #COVID19 https://twitter.com/AshleyFetters/status/1248697994347675649">https://twitter.com/AshleyFet...
/ My main concern lies with #extracurriculars. Non-essential clubs/boards/groups are having meetings to continue their mission as a way to keep some sense of normalcy, which I think is good. HOWEVER, these meetings need to happen during business hours.
/ On campus, it made sense to have these meetings as a way to pass time and build community. However, students are now with their families and shouldn& #39;t feel like they need to be tethered to the computer for academics, and then have to stay there for extracurricular activities.
/ In the evening, many families spend time together because everyone is finished #WFH. It seems unreasonable for clubs to continue to hold evening meetings. On campus, these organizations were how people unwinded outside of academics. Online, it feels like another thing to do.
/ If it& #39;s just friends chatting, that& #39;s one thing. But if it& #39;s a non-essential club conducting actual business, it really needs to be done when students aren& #39;t eating dinner/talking with family/getting away from a computer screen.
/ Every extracurricular organization should be having this conversation. It& #39;s necessary for overall student well-being at home. On campus, there was an academic/extracurricular balance. Now it& #39;s an academic/extracurricular/home balance, and something has to give. #college (/end)
