Is there a greater display of performative bullshit than the stuff that comes from the Twitter accounts of the hyper-online Young Labour activists? Whether its peak cringey, ignorant stanning of Blair, or relentlessly banging on about all the Lenin they've never actually read...
...there seems to have developed a culture where proving themselves to their other hyper-online mates by publicly tearing out the jugular of other activists on Twitter, is seen as paramount to actually engaging in anything resembling useful discourse or promoting their ideas.
The objective more often seems to be a desperate attempt to feed their own egos by getting plaudits from the narrow friendship cliques that have become Young Labour factions and in doing so engage in just the most cringey and transparent dick swinging on Twitter. They all seem...
...to want to be seen as the most hardline, woke/correct, comrade/Blairite out there and so just make the most ridiculously fucking over the top statements about every single thing that occurs within politics that is seen to be in anyway contradictory to their faction. Not only..
...is this often quite embarrassing to watch, in a way I don't think they themselves realise, but its just so blatantly self-aggrandising. I have no question about the sincerity of the convictions of many of these people, but literally nothing they are doing online ever...
...actually advances their convictions in anyway. Its just there to prove to everyone else around them how correct they are, how wrong everyone else is and how fiercely committed they are to their cause. This creates a shitty atmosphere for the vast majority of Young Labour...
...activists who want to get involved in the party without constantly fearing being completely and often savagely besmirched by some overly self-important Twitter activist, or who don't feel comfortable having to eternally prove themselves to cliques so exclusionary...
...they make Mean Girls look like an advertisement in social harmony and inclusiveness. A lot of people need to seriously give their head a wobble if they think their behaviour is in anyway helping their cause or faction, because quite frankly these people make Young Labour...
...a shitty place to be most of the time. There are thousands of amazing activists in Young Labour and across the left who do incredible work without engaging in constant performative Twitter ego trips. We should all be like them. This issue is endemic to all of the factions.
