The best way to understand the symbiotic relationship between Donald Trump and the media is to analogize it to professional wrestling. There is no Vince McMahon without Stone Cold, and there is no Stone Cold without Vince McMahon. 1/
It doesn’t matter who is whom in this scenario, who you cheer for and who you boo. The fact is you’re invested. It’s good television. You have people you love and people you love to hate. 2/
The news media, like pro wrestling, is entertainment first and foremost. You can pretend it’s about highbrow things like “informing the public” or “providing a public service,” and to some it is about those things, but this is a business we’re talking about. 3/
They’re not doing this for free. They’re doing it to make money. It’s a business, and it needs eyeballs, so it’s going to invent storylines and manufacture drama. They’re doing it now by trying to drive a wedge between Fauci and Trump. 4/
It’s objectively bad for the public interest to try and drive this wedge. And make no mistake: They are TRYING TO DRIVE THE WEDGE, because damn it’s good television. 5/
There is no President Donald Trump without a media that includes our brave truth telling firefighters obsequiously hanging on and broadcasting his every utterance between 2015-16 to the exclusion of serious topics because, DAMN it was good television. 6/
And now we’re in the midst of a historic pandemic, and look at the nonsense we’re getting. Because it’s like pro wrestling. It’s ridiculous nonsense. But damn is it entertaining. 7/7
