Independent contractors (ICs) are so because the nature of our work. For example, translators and interpreters work in different projects for multiple clients. I’m court and medically certified so I have the freedom to interpret in different settings for diverse clients.
I also translate documents and I specialize in medical, education, and marketing documents. These skills are useful for many different clients and I help them reach the Spanish speaking population in the US & abroad. As an IC I set my own fees and I choose who I work with & when.
I pay for my own health insurance and a retirement plan. I have IC tax deductions (ie. home office, miles, cont education) that are a trade off for not being a W2.
Also, since I charge above minimum wage I can afford that. I don’t feel “unprotected or exploited by my employer”.
I love what I do and I can’t believe I’m paid to do this.
That’s why the union selling points don’t work for most ICs: We love what we do and get compensated for it. We choose who we work with and get paid accordingly.
#ab5 took this freedom to make our own decisions away from us
People who don’t know how our professions work decided that we, adults, don’t know what we are doing and it was decided for us that the way we work is no longer valid. Why?
Because “the best job is a union job”.
No, it’s not. And that’s why we need #AB5 to be stopped. #freezeAB5
