A story about my Dad...

I remember the time my Dad brought home an older gentleman he met at church. This man had been a general contractor in his younger years, but was injured on the job, went bankrupt, and had since displayed aspects of an ongoing struggle. Head injury.
My Dad brought this man over for dinner and asked him about a project in our kitchen. It wasn’t clear this man was up to it physically anymore, but my Dad asked him for a bid. Dad hired him.
I watched over the next few weeks as the work was done. It wasn’t perfect and there were plenty of parts that would need to be redone.

At the end I saw my Dad thank the man and pay him the full sum. After he left, we could tell the whole thing would have to be redone.
And yet, my Dad indicated he knew from the beginning that would be the case. He hired our friend anyway just so he could pay him and give him the joy of work.
Looking back, I realize my Dad often hired people as a way to care for them and show love. Even now, he loves to tip generously and his favorite pass time is helping others find work.
This has to have been one of the most formative things I ever witnessed. Deep love for a fellow human being was displayed. I still tear up thinking about it. I see he’s done it for me all along the way as well.
I’m so thankful I’ve had parents who model grace and love in the world. It is one less barrier to imagining the love of God.
