It is *not* an economic argument. National holidays mean public transit is shut down. It means that public buildings used for voting centers are closed, and that we'd pay everyone time and a half to work the polls that day. It would substantially increase the cost of elections.
There's also no such thing as "election day." Most states have several days of early voting. If you are seeking to enfranchise the most people, this is the better option. It allows hourly workers to continue getting paid and go to vote when they can.
