This is so complex and I have a lot of thoughts I’ll try to sum up what I’ve put together. There is a subset of the “internet left” that is actually acting on age old right wing principles. A lot of the talking points you hear from these “antis” as they’re known, mirrors (1) https://twitter.com/senedjem/status/1249172794585288706
puritanical talking points that have always plagued the USA. There is extra crisism on POC, double standards for abuse in gay vs het relationships (aka enemies to lovers is fine if it’s m/m but women are too weak to defend themselves)(2)
and deep misogyny in regards to what “appropriate” behavior is for female characters. They hide behind an SJW banner because they can pretend they’re PROTECTING women and children, but the reality is they’re undermining their autonomy & ability to make choices for themselves (3)
Even in the Lilo discourse, regardless of WHAT actually happens re; the characters, the takeaway is that it’s harmful for the VIEWERS. It makes the assumption that people cannot differentiate reality from fiction, on top of (in this case) coming down w puritanical vengeance (4)
on a SIX year old brown girl who just lost her parents. But the content is hardly the issue, because it’s a crusade mentality. To draw another right wing comparison: just like pro-life warriors, it’s very easy to proclaim you’re saving lives when the people you say don’t (5)
exist or have a voice, aka unborn babies, small children, abused women. This is all another way of instilling classic, right wing, ultra conservative values. Children should be seen but not heard. Women should be kept pure and safe, they can’t defend themselves, if people see (6)
read/hear this media they will emulate it! This is book burners. This is people in favor of censorship, of banning lgbt tv shows because Of ThE ChiLdReN. It all circles the same drain of American conservatism. Now, the odd/interesting thing is that a lot of this behavior (7)
from what I have seen, at least, comes from younger people under 22. I think that if you came of age in the 20teens when the right moved SO far right, it’s easy to say “I’m not conservative” when you mean “I’m not a fascist” there isn’t a lot of room for
what would have been the young republicans club a decade ago. And@ since the media has come far w gay acceptance it’s easy for them to say “well I don’t hate gay people so I must be a leftist” but they don’t understand enough about identity politics to realize where they fall
I think with time just about all of these kids will to the right (or right of center) when it comes time for voting, right they will have grown up and learned a little bit pretty nuance. There is a fundamental issue with people not understanding where they actually fall.
Even the name SJW is easily transferable to a pro-life, pro-family values mission. Of course it feels righteous. In reality it’s just oppressive.
