Since I began running for office, our team has received, shall we say, unsolicited advice for me from men & women alike, including:
"Wipe off that lipstick."
"Cut your hair, you'll look older."
"Don't cut your hair, you won't be approachable."
"Put your big girl skirt on."

When I was a candidate, one of the things I talked a lot about was being a role model for young people in our district. I love my job & I love this community, & I am so grateful that folks have entrusted me & my team with such responsibility. I take it incredibly seriously.

We're here to serve, but in keeping with the values of our community, not to mention the values with which I was raised, part of being a role model is standing up to bullies, even when it's tough. It's why I call out the sexism and racism when I see it and hear it.

My point in sharing is this: if you're friends with a female public servant on the frontlines right now, check in on her. Tell them they are loved and respected. If you are represented by a female public servant, consider doing the same. I know she'll appreciate it.
