There is a big difference between doing theology from the church and doing theology for the church.

Even professional theologians in seminaries, colleges, and non-profits, should think about the task of theology as being from the church, not just for the church.

Some professional theologians get frustrated with me when I make this point.

I am not minimizing the importance of theological education outside the church.

This is not a question of “where” one does theology, but “why” one does theology.
