This.

Because, no, the hell they do not. And the trope of the sympathetic racist who learns from the BIPOC they've been abusing is the only trope that needs to die.

I'm sick of seeing it in movies, shows, and book. No. https://twitter.com/ValerieComplex/status/1249798323109855232
Like, the "lesson" that racists are people too and can learn and change or whatever is one we don't need. Because we already know this.

But on top of that, BIPOC aren't here to be tools to teach you. And we're not here to forgive you/make you feel better for your past bullshit.
"What about the people who could learn to empathize with-"

No. If you wanna empathize with BIPOC, you learn from them, not the racists who harm them. There is no reason for this trope except to make people who know racists or are kinda racist themselves feel better about it all.
Like, this shit is dangerous for BIPOC in real life. You got folk out here throwing acid on people for being Asian, but y'all wanna entertain the notion that racists can be heroes, too.

Get the fuck ALL the way outta here with that.
Y'all will give anything to be able to pull an excuse for racism outta your back pocket.

Poor mental health
Bad day/week/year
PTSD or depression

Bitch US TOO!
Most of us deal with that shit BECAUSE of racism and the harm it causes!

But nobody wants to talk about that, do they.
Honestly, I think that trope is so prevalent because white people want to be able to go easy on themselves or others when they're called on their bullshit.

I can't tell you how many times white folk have forgiven each other for racism because "I was in a bad place mentally."
1. Y'all can't forgive each other for that shit. Full stop.

2. Honestly, someone might always be mad at you about it, and rightfully so. So deal.

3. Fuck you, my guy.
And yes, I absolutely count fake racism when it comes to these tropes.

For those who might be confused, fake racism is part of stand in bigotry in stories, usually against aliens, magic users, inhuman creatures, or some inhuman condition from a fantasy or scientific setting.
Here's a thread where I cover the problems with fake racism and stand-in bigotry as a whole. https://twitter.com/ElleOnWords/status/1201645157411622912?s=20
Anywho, long story short, let the redeemable/sympathetic racist trope die a thousand deaths.

Then let that bitch rot.
