as I'm researching what cities are doing for active transportation in response to #COVID2019, one constant I'm seeing is speeding tickets are up, stunting is up, serious car accidents & injuries are up.. even though car traffic is significantly down. What does this tell us?
It points out that the majority of our streets are designed for much greater speeds than the current speed limits. It also says that we rely much more on traffic for traffic calming as opposed to speed bumps & other interventions.
We need to learn from this that we are WAY overbuilding our streets, they are built for speed.. too much speed. It also tells us that a busy, cluttered street is safer for everyone; driver, pedestrian, cyclist.. everyone!
To get safer streets we need lower speed limits, more trees, more clutter, wider sidewalks, more street side activity, narrower streets & travel lanes, fewer travel lanes, diagonal parking.. bike lanes.. These things will all make everyone safer.. and happier! #winnipeg #cdnmuni
