Let's talk about the next 5 months!
-Excess inventory as titles get pushed out
-Printing issues. Biggest book printer just filed Ch 11
-Cash flow. Payout lower on-signing & spread across more pymts
-Big 5 pubs becoming 4 https://twitter.com/BarsottiKlb/status/1249786115726413826
-Rise of @Bookshop_Org & indies
-Lower orders from BN
-Continued growth of audiobooks
-Foreign rights focused on big projects
-Live events may not come back for a while
-Media coverage tough until after election
-Greater coop mktg among authors 😍
It's not all gloom. Publishers are still acquiring projects for 2021 & beyond. People are reading books & rediscovering the pleasure, a habit that I hope they will continue. The industry will bounce back but it will be rocky for a while.
In the meantime, aspiring authors, aside from polishing your manuscript/sample chapters, use the time to get known to people who might want to read your book. Authors who come with a ready readership/tribe will be gold.
