should i scan these? #cdnhist #bchist #biggamble
okay, will scan and post here over coming days. here is the line-up of whats to come. #bchist #cdnhist
and here is the joker in the deck. @TinaAdcock
here is the back of the cards -- i think it is of emerald lake in @YohoNP, which presages how cpr-centric the rest of the deck is
here is the king of spades card, of the canadian pacific railway's original mainline in the rogers pass and @GlacierNP
the queen of spades: an unusual view of takkakaw falls in @YohoNP
castle mountain in @BanffNP. to me, this is not cool. just three cards into the "souvenirs of british columbia" card pack and here is an alberta landscape -- the first of several, in fact.
the 10 of spades: the cpr in the kicking horse cañyon, between golden bc and @YohoNP
the 9 of spades: "indians of the tsimpshan tribe." the cpr began its coastal service to alaska in 1901 so, perhaps that explains the inclusion of this image (and could help narrow down where it was made)
the 8 of spades: hells gate on the fraser river. they used the “~” on “cañyon” here too, which seems redundant
another albertan intruder: the 7 of spades shows the bow river in @BanffNP as viewed from the (original) cpr hotel.
naturally, on the 6 of spades are the "big trees" in vancouver's stanley park. @seankheraj
the 5 of spades features cattle on the range. #aghist @kamloopsmuseum
the 4 of spades is another view in @YohoNP: of mts vaux and chancellor from the cpr mainline near leanchoil station. easy to duplicate this view today, as the trans-canada hwy runs exactly where the railway used to: https://goo.gl/maps/gZPtbzYxYY9XspLu9
the 3 of spades (and what other suit for a mining town?) is the mountain kingdom: rossland! @RosslandMuseum #mininghist
should start saturday with the ace of spades, so here is the 2 of spades: cutting down a "big tree" someplace near vancouver. perhaps in stanley park, where the big trees are found... @foresthistory
"the ace of spades, the ace of spades": the great divide on the cpr mainline, where @banffnp and @yohonp meet. a bit of alberta in here, but as stephen station is in bc, this can be counted as a bc landscape. @myMotorhead
from spades to diamonds, and the rockies to the selkirks: the king of diamonds is the great glacier in rogers pass (in @GlacierNP). this was one of western canadas biggest tourist attractions until 1916, when it disappeared from view (the cpr re-routed its line through a tunnel)
the queen of diamonds card is a "blackfoot indian." though not in bc, this illustrates how seeing "indians" was a popular goal for tourists to western canada around the turn of the last century.
the jack of diamonds shows the kicking horse river and (part of) mt stephen at field bc, in @YohoNP. @followthetrack
the 10 of diamonds is a picturesque glimpse of the gorgeous gorge (plus some bridges) in victoria bc. @K_elly_B @victoriavisitor
the 9 of diamonds is yet another alberta image: the cpr's banff springs hotel, which was built in 1888, enlarged in 1914, and then replaced after a big fire in 1926. @FairmontSprings
the 8 of diamonds is the provincial exhibition grounds in @New_Westminster. it was a precursor (and then competitor) to @PNE_Playland, and operated 1869-1929. more info here: https://vancouvertraces.weebly.com/royal-agricultural-exhibition.html
the 7 of diamonds is the st alice hotel at harrison hot springs, which was just a short distance from the cpr mainline. @harrisontourism @HaileyVenn
the 6 of diamonds is another hotel: the cpr's first "hotel vancouver." @FairmontVan @BCPubHistory
the 5 of diamonds proudly shows off how big and developed the city of vancouver was, about fifteen years after it was established with completion of the cpr. @VanArchives @HeritageVan
