The Putter & putting:the Billy Baroo; the wand; the short stick; Old Faithful. The most important club in the bag - it will be used more in a round than any other club. Here’s three of mine, all 35” in length. Let’s take a look at each of them & then we’ll see how they putt...
We see all styles of putting when on the course. Heel down, toe up; a bit toey (toe down, heel up); neutral; and everything else in between. I like a neutral position. All putters have a convex sole, here’s how these three sit when in a neutral position...
First up, this circa 100 year old putter or putting cleek, by Cochranes of Edinburgh. The head is hand forged. The grip is 13” long so you can stand quite upright or grip down & really hunch over the ball if preferred. Very thin line when looking down on it from above...
Ping Anser: arguably the most iconic club in golf & copied often. First made in 1966, its 1st Major win was 1969 when George Archer won using one in The Masters. The putter with most wins in Tour history. This one is around 25 years old. My dad still has his from the mid 70’s...
Raylor Ghost Fontana by Taylor Made. I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to sports gear so how this made it off the shelf, nevermind into my bag, is a mystery! It’s white FFS! Released in 2011, I bought it 2013ish maybe. It has a dble bend hosel. Still in my bag...
So lets see how they putt. First though, the ball! A Slazenger B51, UK size (1.62) and dates from the late 60’s. They say the B51 was a ball favoured by Jack Nicklaus back the day. I’m guessing a surlyn cover...
The grip. Like most golfers I’ve tinkered & tried all sorts of grips over the years. I’ve settled on this & haven’t changed for a long time, the last 10 anyway. As they say, grip the club as if squeezing a tub of toothpaste...
The stance, feet shoulder width apart, ball a little forward, for me feet slightly open, not much but a turn of the left foot makes it look more than it is & really just to have the feeling of the left hip being out of the way. Right foot square to the hole...
The stroke: my aim is to take the putter straight back & straight thru, or as close to that as I can.
As for pace - dead weight! Not quite TW at 16 in 2005 dead weight but I’ve always putted like that & never been one for 17” past the hole or batterin the ball at back of cup...
So let’s see how we go. Putting from about 5ft here. I think I’m a good putter. Not brilliant, but not bad & generally pretty solid from inside 6 feet.
First up the putting cleek by Cochranes, it’s actually quite difficult to feel as if you are takin this straight back & thru..
Next, the Ping Anser. A putter I loved but just woke up and fancied a change one day. My dad bought his for £20 back in the day. Still love the noise it makes and it’s still a great putter. First putt the B51, 2nd putt using a Titleist NXT Tour...
Finally, the Fontana by Taylor Made. I’ve always liked a mallet shaped putter head. Despite its colour, I just like standing over & looking down on this & ball rolls off the face really nice. The markings on the sole (above) suggest I’m a bit more toey with this than I thought..
Thanks for reading! I’m just an amateur golfer. When it comes to putting, I still don’t like a left to right swinging putt!

In case you were wondering the putting device/gizmo thing is by @puttoutgolf Its highly addictive!
