A thread on Ghibli films & how they were probs the 1st things to teach me how wonderful/joyful it can be to look at food.

Starting w/ my fave film Kiki's Delivery Service. Each shot may not be highly rendered, but reasons for each food being made is so purposeful & sentimental.
The grandma makes a herring pie(or food in gen) for those that she loves & we see that again @ the end of the film when she makes Kiki her bday cake. Osono's oatmeal feels so heartwarming. Ursula's colourful gum reflects a bright new journey Kiki is about to embark on 4 herself❤️
Also more food shots. That sponge cake bruh...... I wanted to have a whole tea party after seeing this scene lol.
The Cat Returns!
The film doesn't really feature a lot of food shots, but the shots they do have still stand out. Esp! The breakfast shot at the beginning!!! I love a good fried egg. (Also, anyone else think those fish crackers tasted like cuttlefish chips or sth?)
Whisper of The Heart barely had any food shots! I still really enjoyed simple foods being portrayed though. The fanciest dish featured- fittingly for a humble celebratory dinner for Shizuku, like her beginnings as a writer-- was udon soup! Very comforting food and scene to watch.
My Neighbour Totoro! A few food shots that I like from the film are these. As a kid the BENTO was something I wanted so much!!! Also, when I was in the countryside in Japan, the veggies and fish were on POINT. Looking at these photos now I can just taste everything lol.
Castle In The Sky. I can't think of any other word at the moment to describe the food shots in this film but.......honest. Meat and potatoes. Right to the point lol! Just like the personalities of the pirates and the intense situation everyone is in.
To be continued...~
OKKK-LaAaA~
The one and only food scene we care about in this movie, yeah? lol! I'm not a huge fan of bacon, but Howl's Moving Castle's breakfast scene makes me feel like I need to eat it right NOW!!!
Also! Thought I'd mention that The Ghibli Museum a year or so ago had a food centered postcard pack! 「食べるを描く。」I didn't visit the museum that year but a friend of mine did and bought me these cards as a gift :) I have some on my wall in my bedroom 💛
PONYO~!
The film was so..so cute. Not too many food shots either but the ones that were there were full of wonder, because everything was new to Ponyo! The only shot that's lacking wonder was Sosuke eating ice cream 🤣 Also shout-out to the mom for making all the food fun!!
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind! Erm so this movie really takes #1 when it comes to least amount of food shots LOL. I got Nausicaä and her companion eating Chiko nuts tho. Cute moment between the two.
