boy nothing gives me the shits more than trying to decide if i fuckin like a band / song / whatever the fuck. is it bland, passive, or what? am i not in the mood, feeling the vibe? is it something i& #39;d say, "i& #39;ll come back to this for a couple listens," and never do?
don& #39;t get me started on defining what "bland" music is, cause i don& #39;t entirely know. i think my view on what i consider bland music is fucked if any of you knew extensively what i& #39;ve dismissed as boring and what i& #39;ve engaged myself in.
guess it comes down to if it made me feel anything. could even take a couple listens cause i might just not fuckin get it. then it& #39;s like, that area where it& #39;s like, a little light of understanding that gets me. now i have to decide if it& #39;s pretentious, try hard, or whatever
but why the fuck do i feel so whatever about shit sometimes!? when do i open up and get it? or when do i just say, "nah this shit ain& #39;t cutting it."? varying degrees of this between instrumental cuts and songs alike just because you can& #39;t categorize them as the same.
maybe boring and bland aren& #39;t the right words, it& #39;s too dismissive, but the attitude lies within being dismissive. if familiarity or simplicity were culprits then others and i wouldn& #39;t return to the things we like often nor would we try to branch out and find similar sounds.
it& #39;s that fucking aha feeling! it& #39;s neither universally a happy one or a depressing one. it& #39;s that relation to a piece whether for a long lasting impression or an in-the-moment occurrence that& #39;ll only be a fading memory.
within this relation, we& #39;re just beings who appreciate the factors that cover the sonic range. "what can we do with it?" we& #39;ve applied skills and ideas to sound.
within respective innovations, shit& #39;s put together and it just hits right for what it wants to do
i don& #39;t think the pretentiousness or try-hardness i mentioned are the factors, they were just dismissive terms although they could effect personal taste. where i think when i dismiss something is: i find artists didn& #39;t greatly put themselves into an innovation they put forth
innovation is a loose term here referring to a piece that they put out. a piece could be too familiar for various reasons, seeking money or just unable to strike that genius yet. repetition within an album or across various work shows decay in ideas.
can& #39;t even begin discussing the quality as a factor, for how black and white it should be it& #39;s become a stylistic choice for artists. you best convey it within your pieces with 110% clear intent though cause it& #39;s a fine fuckin line you tread with stylizing quality.
to say the least tho, shit& #39;s probably shit if the quality is shit with no real artistic intention and even then the line is so fine that you could even falter within a choice. don& #39;t really have a good example at this given moment but i know things like this have happened.
familiarity within pieces that do nothing or very little to bring an artist& #39;s self identity in it to differentiate from other inspirations and quality are big factors for me then.
also as far as songs go it doesn& #39;t help if your song sounds like it was written by a moody ass 7th grader striking low ass grades in english. you know, when they think they& #39;re upset but don& #39;t know why and also don& #39;t care, really conveys that low-inspiration factor, sounds boring
anyway i got sidetracked for a bit, to keep it short ignorance in lyrics effects taste but at least is a discerning factor in understanding how i feel about a song. i think this thread was me trying to understand why i don& #39;t readily like or dislike a song
