comic creators: talk to people who have worked with publishers you’re considering. have experts look over contracts. negotiate royalties, look closely at your ip rights, know that you deserve to be paid well. you’re working on properties that are clearly worth netflix money
this might be a timely subtweet, but frankly, it’s good advice across the board. there’s money in crossplatform adaptations and comics are a comparatively affordable incubator. the fact that you like what you do doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to get paid a living wage for it
if you are an american comic creator, you have to pay for healthcare or marry someone who has it. factor that in. factor in that adobe subscription, convention promo, hiring flatters, that self-employment tax. all of it. then picture the tv profits. you deserve to be PAID
if a publisher approaches you it is because they believe you will make them a PROFIT. it is NOT PERSONAL, it is for their SHAREHOLDERS. it is NOT shameful or awkward or unprofessional to negotiate accordingly. i will yell about this until i am dead
it is worth noting that i am absolutely blessed to be in a position where i have a few books under my belt, love my publisher, and have an agent who looks out for me, so that i can feel comfortable shouting about how people deserve to feel like their work is worth money.
