The biggest opposition line to the #kilo #submarine offer for #India ses to be "it's old" .
The project 636.6 KILO is as different to the 877EKM units we got in the early 90's as the SU 35 is to the SU27 .
Beneath that basic design commonality they are different beasts. https://twitter.com/colorblind07/status/1249759349947285504
The Russian offer has three big takeaways for me
1) Can use existing logistics in place for KILO.
2) Rather cheap at $300Mn/boat. The P75I in comparison is some $1Bn/boat.
3) Still being used by primary producer. The #Russian Navy plans to use these well into the 2040's .
Good question: The 3 #IndianNavy units & the 3 Russian old hulls being offered now will likely go through a life extension program that should see them serve till 2040 if this deal is accepted .
New boats would last till 2050-55 . https://twitter.com/OhPotty/status/1249776399185043468?s=19
Something I've often backed as well.
At $400-450Mn per new boat new 636.3 units made in a #India #Russia JV #submarine yard can help us add numbers for cheap.
The ~$8Bn P75I can help us acquire 15 units instead of six uber European SSKs. https://twitter.com/Suri38436305/status/1249777375044177922?s=19
Building large numbers of the KILO 636.3 in a JV in #India will help kickstart indigenous #submarine production .I've often stated "spending $8Bn on 6 SSKs is stupid" .We need no's. Should build another 3 Scorpene at @MDL_SUBMARINE for $2Bn & spend $6Bn on 12 new 636.3 KILO .
