/ There will be books written on the psychology of #COVID terror. I don’t mean the media players on Team Apocalypse; they look to be equally driven by hatred of Trump and the reality of those terrifying March days in New York City, where so many live...
/ No, I mean the (often) upper-middle class ppl who are under 50, healthy, and thus at very low risk - with kids at even less risk. Who've been cowering in their houses for a month. Who won't even to their kids play. OUTSIDE. ALONE. And who call the neighbors on anyone who does.
/ They have the time and money to do yoga and make sure their houses are BPA-free; they go to farmers markets and eat organic or (better) locally sourced artisanal food. They are going to live forever, and their allergen- (and sometimes vaccine) free kids even longer, dammit.
/ They are not scientific; they are quasi-scientific. Now along comes #COVID. It’s not the flu. It’s so much worse. The details are cloudy, but that much is clear. And they’ve got enough money to pay the bills, for a while, and they can work (whatever work they do) from home.
/ So (for now) there is no public health rule they won’t enthusiastically enforce, no economic consequence too severe. And the Constitution, that’s just a piece of paper. They don’t do anything wrong, so what do they have to worry about?
/ And so it is only natural and right that California – the home of eternal youth, eternal beauty, and eternal life – has gone further and faster down the lockdown path than anywhere, despite its empty hospitals.

Because you can’t live forever if #COVID kills you.
