Wanted to share what one of my pitchers and I were working on before the season got cut short. He previously had labrum surgery and struggled to get into scap retraction w a longer arm action. Bc of this, he had poor ER and forearm flyout that put increased stress on the elbow
The first place we went to attack this deficiency was with pivot picks. Then we decided to add some drills into catch play and mound work. With catch play we added the use of a 7oz bc it allowed him to get into a better position while also creating less stress compared to the 5oz
We are working on being elbow dominant to get into more scap retraction. Being elbow dominant requires his forearm to be in a neutral to slightly supinated position. Some of the cues we used were, “keep thumb close to ear hole” and act like he’s performing a row
Additionally, we added in a toss of the ball. When tossing the ball, we found that he was better able to get into the positons we wanted. The most exciting part is that as time went on the athlete was starting to feel when his arm action was getting longer towards second base.
He was gaining proprioception, allowing him to make the wanted adjustments. We still have some way to go but definitely on the right path to throwing more efficiently in order to throw harder while decreasing that risk of injury
