I am a Bhumihar, a landowner Brahmin race said to be gifted lands by Lord Parshuram after he defeated Kshatriyas and the lands fell vacant. We were categorized as a 'martial race' by Britishers till my ancestors revolted in 1857 for dharma against use of beef in cartridges

of British Enflied Rifles. This led to the First War of Independence, 1857. Most regiments of Bengal Native Infantry comprising of Bhumihars and Rajputs of Poorvanchal and Bihar were disbanded as a result.

The Bhumihar Brahmin only perform one half of the prescribed Brahmanical duties. They give alms, but do not receive them, they offer sacrifices to their idols, but do not perform the duties and offices of the priesthood; they read the scared writings but do not teach them.

Most landlords/ zamindars of East India were Bhumihars. Our lands were as large as eyes could see and mind you Ganga plains are flat. The zamindaris ceased to exist after new Land Reforms in 1950s called 'The Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms
Act 1950'.

In the early 1990s, landowners and upper caste farmers of Eastern UP and Bihar were faced with a new enemy: Communism. Many disillusioned and unemployed youth in these regions joined Naxalite movement and took up arms thereby attacking landowners for money.

Bhumihars under the leadership of Brahmeshwar Singh formed Ranvir Sena, which was a upper caste, far right, anti communist militant organization. They answered swords with bullets and again established their dominance in the agrarian belt. Ranvir Sena was banned later.

Bhumihars though very few in numbers still have a disproportionate representation in politics and bureaucracy of India. The Raja of Benaras Pricely State (flag below) is also a Bhumihar.

The objective of this mini-thread was that every caste and even sub-caste of this ancient land has a lot of history to it, some may have been made up and most may have actually happened. Every cog in the wheel was important to make India what it is we pride on.
