🇫🇷 @EmmanuelMacron is addressing France for the 3rd time since the #COVID19 crisis began. France has been under home confinement since March 17.
—says he understands how hard this is, especially for old people
—says the state has come through, that hospitals are functioning
🇫🇷 Macron: "Were we prepared for this crisis? Not enough. But we have faced the challenge."
"Let's be honest, we lacked gowns, PPE, disinfectant gel, we weren't able to distribute enough masks."
"Like you, I've seen delays, weaknesses in our logistics"
🇫🇷Macron: But we're on the case. I want to be transparent: in the Grand Est and Île-de-France hospitals are overwhelmed and we have to stick to the rules to save lives.
HOME CONFINEMENT EXTENDED UNTIL MONDAY, MAY 11
🇫🇷Macron: The rules won't be made more strict nor loosened by they need to be respected.
(NB: The home confinement rules now extended to May 11 mean you can only leave home for urgent reasons—getting food, medical care, essential jobs, exercising one hour a day near home.)
🇫🇷Macron: During the home confinement period (through May 11), France will extend partial unemployment scheme, in which the state funds businesses to pay workers reduced salaries, not fire them. (More than 8 million workers, 1 in 3 private sector workers, now on this scheme.)
🇫🇷Macron: After May 11, France will gradually reopen nurseries, elementary schools, middle and high schools, because the home confinement situation has revealed serious inequalities. Less fortunate students don't have access to computers at home.
🇫🇷Macron: But after May 11, hotels, restaurants, cafés, cinemas, theaters, will remain closed, and there will be no major cultural events until mid-July at the earliest, but everything will be reevaluated every two weeks.
🇫🇷Macron: We're going to increase the number of tests in the coming weeks, especially on older people and health care workers. **By May 11 we will be able to test everyone showing symptoms.** "It wouldn't make sense" to test everyone in France.
🇫🇷Macron: This epidemic won't weaken our democracy or our liberties. Until May 11 our external borders will remain closed.
We're working with mayors so that after May 11 all people in France will be able to have individual masks, which will become obligatory. #COVID19
🇫🇷Macron: I wish I could answer your questions (about what happens next, the future, tests, immunity). "In all frankness and in all humility we don't have a definitive answer." Very few people have immunity. We need a vaccine. France to invest massively in research. #COVID19
🇫🇷Macron: "I am telling you what we know and what we don't know."
"We will we have to live many more months with this virus" "With humility, we need to decide how to act taking into account uncertainties." #COVID19
🇫🇷Macron: The EU 🇪🇺 and ECB have given some help, but "we're at a moment of truth that requires more audacity. We need a moment of renewal." We need massive debt relief. "We will never win alone." In Bergamo, Madrid, Brussels, Dakar, etc. people face the same death. #COVID19
🇫🇷Macron: We are living through a massive upheaval. We are all vulnerable. There is possibility in this crisis. We will persevere and maintain our humanity.
We will have better days and will remember our happy days.
Take care of yourselves.
Vive la République et vive la 🇫🇷
